Andalusia is famous for its holiday ressorts, such as Marbella but the south of Spain is also famous for its ignorance towards the animals. 

In a country where every 3 days a lady dies through the hands of her partner, animals get even less respect. Here is the satement of our friend Juan Jesus from Sierra de Cadiz. He works in a City Dog Pond and tries to save as many dogs as he can....

"I got a call from a lady mentioning that a beige Galgo (spanish greyhound breed) was wandering free in a village, around 50km away from my home. I was told, that the dog looks ill and very thin. I took the car and drove there but only to find the dog like the picture above. Some bored youngsters had beaten him to death. The worst is, that the local police did refuse to take a report about the case. The found it not worth the hassle! And even after the names of those youngsters are known to us and the police!!!"

This picture has been sent to many european and US animal welfare groups and many offered help. At least 70 of the hounds in the killing station were saved and rehomed, even to the USA. 11 dogs were homed in Germany and the UK due to the support of PRO-GALGO.

A few weeks later Juan Jesus found an other galgo, completly destroyed by dog bites. He was obviously used as a sparring partner for dog fights. Again the police did not want to react and it seems to be obviouse that an awfull lot of money from drugs etc. is involved in dogfights. It has been heard that over 20'000USD where on a bet for just one fight near Seville, usualy organised by local gipsies, and the police seems to be afraid to investigate.

This little podenco has been hanged with a wire. He was brought like that to the City Dog Pound and Juan Jesus saved him by sending us the pictures and asking PRO-GALGO to home the dog. Our partners in Germany found a nice home for him and he will never ever have to suffer again!
